SWANTON in Michigan City, 1850s

I am researching the family of Sarah SWANTON, b Jan 1853 in Michigan City, IN, to parents Samuel SWANTON and Mary SULLIVAN. In December, 1854, Sarah's sister Ellen was born somewhere in IN. Sometime before December, 1855, Samuel SWANTON died. The next I know, widow Mary is marrying Edward X. RYAN in Valparaiso, Porter Co., IN, in Dec 1855, where she and the two SWANTON daughters remain through the 1870 census.

My main question is: where and when did Samuel SWANTON die? Does anyone know of any county resource that would list deaths that early? Or does anyone know which Catholic Church in Michigan City area would have been established by that time?

Thx in advance for any suggestions. --Jacqi
