Looking for Early History of Indiana

I am hoping someone might give me an educated guess about the earliest settlers of Indiana and from whence they likely came. Perhaps it would open a door for me about my ancestors, William Franklin Shaw who married Phoebe Burns in Terre Haute in 1845, then went west and after a short stay near Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, settled in Clark County, Missouri. Now here is what I am wondering:
according to census records, both of them were born in Indiana, William in Terre Haute about 1824. And both his parents, and both of Phoebe's parents, were also born in Indiana! Isn't that really early for folks to have been born there? From what I have been reading, the southern part of the state was settled first, and I suppose the military posts--were there families at the forts? I am hoping someone will make an educated guess about what part of the state was a likely or possible location for folks to have been born in Indiana so early that their children were born there in the 1820's! The grandparents of my William and Phoebe had to have been in Indiana! And the same information shows up on all the available census records. I have been searching for years and find little except bits and pieces--they eloped from Terre Haute and went west with a Quaker emigrating to Iowa--the name Taylor figures in somewhere--they had cousins named Gray--they named the first son Isaac and the first daughter Phoebe--they lived in Winchester, Missouri and are buried in Taylor Cemetery--the family was very gifted in instrumental music and literature--they could all write stories, poetry, sermons--you name it! Thank you.
