Kathy, this is why I believe that he moved to Posey County, IN. I have cemetery records for Union County, KY and he is not buried there. I've summarized his family after the notes. Many Benthalls left Posey Kentucky for Illinois. I suppose he could have gone with them.

Mike

Your Thomas is likely the son of Reuben Benthall of Carteret County, NC.

December Court 1784
Thomas Benthall, the son of Reuben Benthall Dec'd came into court and chose John Adams for a Master, to learn the trade of a Hatt Maker. Ordered that the Clerk furnish the indentures. (NOTE: I believe a boy could choose his own master at age 14, so I'd guess Thomas was born around Sep to Dec 1770. This would fit the following entry also.....JSR.)

This is the last Carteret County Court entry I find that mentions Thomas Benthal. I have the Court records up to 1823 so he may have left the County around 1804 or 1805.

Thomas was listed in the 1840 census and had two female children. He and his wife Mary sold land to Matilda Benthall in 1840. I don't know the other female's name.

1840 Posey census has a Jacob , Rueben and Thomas

On 3/18/1837 a Thomas Benthall bought 40 acres in Posey County, IN

I didn't print out the 1840 census because its impossible to read. There is a Thomas Benthall in Black Posey Co. IN, male over 60, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 50-60. I don't think this is Jacob's son, I think his son was born in the 1830's. Most of Jacob's kin had changed the spelling to Bentle by now.
