Dear Mary,
Thanks very much for your response regarding Insall. I also descend from Thomas Holifield Insall and Mary Wholeship (my grandmother’s notes question the spelling, so I wasn’t certain whether Wholeship or Holdshipp was correct).
Robert Wholeship Insall, your ancestor, is on my list of Thomas and Mary’s children.
I descend from Thomas and Mary’s daughter, Alzira Isabelle Insall, born 15 Oct 1837 in LA. She married Robert Beverly Duke, who died four years after their marriage, leaving her with two daughters. She then married James Donaldson Guseman on 18 April 1861. They had five children that I know of, among them my great-grandmother Sarah Virginia Gusman Walker. Do you need more details?
I haven’t done any of my own research on the earlier members of this line—have found later members of the family in the 1880 census for Colorado Co. TX. The original research was done by Mike Shannon, who communicated with my grandmother about it when she was still alive. Some information comes from family Bible records of JD Gusman.
I have Thomas’ place of birth as Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, and date of birth as 1 April 1776. He died 15 Oct 1849 in Bayou Chicot, LA. Thomas’ parents were William Insall (b. 8 Nov 1745 in Chipping Norton) and Ann Biggerstaff (b. 13 Jan 1744 in Chipping Norton)—William and Ann were married 31 Oct 1768 in Chipping Norton.
For Mary, I have date of birth 5 Sep 1796 in PA (or LA?), and her date of death, 16 Oct 1858, near Weimar, Colorado Co. TX. They were married on 11 Dec 1810 in St. Mary Parish, LA. Mary’s parents were Thomas Wholeship and Martha Gansey. I have Martha Gansey’s parents as Ben J. Gansey (b. about 1740 in NJ, lived in Philadelphia) and Marie Andrus or Andrews (b. about 1740, probably in France) [this mostly from researcher Mike Shannon].
I’d be very interested in any information you have concerning our mutual ancestors—anything on Thomas and Mary, their parents, Thomas’s reasons for immigrating, any news of the Insall Manor. I’ll see whether I have the photos of Insall relatives (don’t know whether they may have ended up with another relative), and if I do, I can scan them for you.
Thanks again for contacting me. Any further information is greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
Narca Moore-Craig
