Doolings from Ireland Settle in Pennsylvania
My "Doolings" were listed as Dolan in an early census
(1860) in PA. In the 1850 census they were listed as
Dooley; in the 1870 Census they were listed as Doolin and
from the 1880 census onward they were listed as Dooling.
In Boyd's Directory, 1867-68, for Pottsville, Tamaqua,
Mahanoy City, Ashland and Minersville listed under
Minersville "James Dooling, laborer, h. Coal alley."
This is a lot of info, but if anything sounds familiar, I
would appreciate your thoughts:

Palmyra, NJ died: 05 Aug 2004 in ATH Heights Hospital, 1917

Joseph James is my father. His brother (John Stuart)
became a priest and from 1965 until 1978, Father Dooling
served as the first president of Allentown College, which
in January changed its name to De Sales University.
We don't know where the Haughneys or the Doolings emigrated
from in Ireland. I recently found the grave stone of a
Bridget Dooling in St Vincent De Paul's cemetery in
Minersville.Based on the information on her gravestone, I
can't find any direct relationship to our Doolings, but the
gravestone at least gives some information about her Irish
origins.
By the way, this gravestone is NOT one of the ones listed
in any survey of people buried in St Vincents and the
church has no record of her death. I don't know why that
is, because her name (Bridget Dooling) is clearly readable.
The balance of the grave stone took us hours to interpret.
The inscription reads:
IHS
Sacred
To the memory of Bridgett Dooling
A native of Ireland, Queens
County, Parish of Mayo who
departed this life Nov 21, 1859
in the 60 year of her age
May her soul rest in peace Amen
Erected by sons Laurence
John & Edward Dooling
(The addition of Ellen Brennan was obvious added much
later)
Also
Mrs Ellen Brennan
Died Feb 11, 1914
I am speculating that Bridget came to the US some time
after 1845 (at the age of 45) and, if so, her sons were
probably born in Ireland.Another speculation, since she
wasn't buried with her husband (and no other Dooling
appears to have been buried in St Vincents (except for a
Patrick Dooling who was a private in the Civil war and was
buried without a stone marker.Patrick was single & died
in 1904), her husband could have died before they
emigrated.
Further speculating, that my Doolings (James & Elizabeth)
were related to Bridget & her husband.Since James &
Bridget's husband were of approximately the same age, they
could have been brothers. There are other Doolings in the
area that I can not connect to James & Elizabeth and they
could be related to Bridget & her husband.
More speculation, since Ellen died 54 years after Bridget,
it is possible she was Bridget's daughter who married a
Brennan. It seems unlikely that she was not some relative
of Bridget's and with the difference in age, it seems
likely she was the next or maybe even the following
generated (could have been Bridget's granddaughter)
The DOOLING name is somewhat difficult to trace. James &
Elizabeth could not read or write, so their name was
probably spelled based on whatever the writer heard, rather
than an exact spelling.
I have identified the following variations of Dolan/Dooling
