Hi Nikki,
Several years ago I was given this information by a professional family names researcher, who showed me the IRONS entry in a book - At that time I wasn't researching my family name and didn't take a note of the title or it's ISBN number. The article also stated that the surnames HIRONS, HIORNS and a few others were of the same origin.
Since that time I have purchased a family scroll from an organisation called 'The Hall of Names', 205 St John's Hill, Battersea, London SW1 1TH.This states that the Hirons surname (including Hiorns, Irons & Kenirons etc.) is Norman Viking. It also mentions links to the village of Airan near Caen in Normandy.
My Aunt has a similar, more concise document produced by a different organisation which also states the name IRONS and its variants to be of Norman Viking origin.
Regards,
John Hirons
