A letter I sent to John LeClair in Debdon, Sask., Ca

Sunday 11-20-05

Just checking out some genealogy stuff and your name popped. My name is Sherman Isbister and I live in Sedona, Arizona. I was born in Prince Albert Saskatchewan in 1946 and spent part of my youth on a farm in Mont Nedo, Saskatchewan. Moved from there to Montana in the mid-fifties. I went through high school in Shelby Montana, then move to Southern California for a few years before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966.

My parents are John and Ethel Isbister who farmed approximately 6 miles north and east of Mount Nebo. My paternal grandparents were Jack and Annie Isbister who farmed adjacent to our place. Grandpa Jack's father was Bob or Robert Isbister who is buried at Mistawasis reserve along with my Grandpa Jack and my father John. Bob or Robert Isbister married a lady from by the name of Marguerite Dreaver. Marguerite Dreaver was the daughter of Chief Mistawasis. The dates of marriage are not available at this point but I do have an aunt in Prince Albert who has all this information available.

By the way Robert's father, John married a girl in Winnipeg or near there who was the daughter of another Cree Chief in that area. Her name escapes me but if you're interested I can find out. Robert is also the brother of James Isbister whom as you know settled Prince Albert way back when. I believe there were four brothers Robert (Mont Nebo) James (Prince Albert) Adam ( around South Branch - south of Prince Albert) and George (farm instructor at Sandy LakeRez for awhile) who left Winnipeg back in the mid-1800s to settle out West and they chose northern Saskatchewan. Robert had a bunch of kids, the boys names were William (Bill), James(who lived north of Debden about 10 miles or so) and some mean old bastard who lived in Shell Lake by the name of Richard, Fred (in LaRonge) and George AKA Chachee who apparently did a lot of teepee creeping in and around Long Lake or Whitefish Lake. Three of the daughters I know, one was named Francis from Mont Nebo, Ellen Pocha from Saskatoon and Maggie Ahenakew from Sandy Lake Rez.

John, I spend most of the summers in Montana, Alaska or Canada and I will be there next summer as usual so if you have any questions let me know and I will make a few phone calls and hopefully get you some answers.

John, just spoke with my mother in Canwood and I know your mother Mary who lives across the street. Small world, huh?

Have a wonderful evening,
