Hi Susan, It is really fun to find so many distant Ison cousins on the internet.I once got so desperate for Ison info on Sir Gideon Ison that I emailed Lamport Hall and asked for help, I didn't get an answer, but I was hoping!! LOL :o)The tradition of Sir Gideon Ison was not handed down to me, I never heard of him until I started into genealogy. My Ison family line stayed put in Kentucky from Archibald until my dad, which would be four generations before me.Archibald's son Isaac Ison moved to what became eventually Morgan County, Kentucky.Archibald's place of settlement eventually became Elliott County, Kentucky. The only information passed down to me was that the family had lived in the area of Virginia around Blackmore Fort, which is now Scott County, Virginia.I have been there, it is a pretty area.
Susan, I sure hope that if you find out something on the Ison family before John Ison and Mary Hough that you post it here.I have been trying to document my ancestry before Charles Ison married to Elizabeth, the parents of Archibald Ison, and have gotten nowhere so far.I can document Charles as the father of Archibald and Elizabeth as his mother with Archibald's Morgan County death record. The record gives his father as Charles and mother as Elizabeth and place of birth as Scott County. It does not say on the death record Virginia but we can assume so.I do believe that the census record for 1850 does say Virginia and also the earlier children of Archibald give their place of birth as Virginia.I so far can't prove the parentage of Charles with any paper proof. He is given in all the genealogies on the internet as the son of John Jr. Ison and Rebecca Jones, but I have nothing to show me this is true other than heresay.Where is the proof on this family? Heresay is not enough for me, I want paper proof, or at least good circumstantial proof.I find plenty on the internet but no documentation to speak of.Susan, do you have anything on Charles Ison, the father of Archibald Ison (married to Mary Gilliam)? Also, I would like to know, was the story of Sir Gideon Ison passed down to you, or just that John's father was a man named Gideon Ison?I have stories of Isons leaving the hills of Morgan County with a wagon train going out west.My Uncle said he was told that several in the family had converted to the Mormon faith and went out west, ending up eventually in Idaho.
