Hugh Isbister/Ivester who came from Orkney to Savannah 1775 on Marlborough was NOT the son of David and Janet Omand Isbister as stated in the ship cargo. David Dobson, who submitted the list, was in error. He found in the parish records a listing for a Hugh Isbister as born to David and Janet, same relative age, and he assumed, as many of us would, that this was the one. In fact, Hugh the son of David and Janet never left Orkney, never married, inherited his mother's property (quite unusual to be landed in that time), and at his death in Orkney 1806 the property passed to his sister and her descendents. These descendents have copies of the court records, and so do I. They were given me by a family member. Hope this lays to rest a lot of questions. Personally I think that his parents are George and Mary Isbister; but have no proof. I am satisfied to know that Hugh is one of the large clan of Isbisters from the Stenness/Orphir area of Orkney, and ultimately all of Orkney today.
