Hi Joe, My ancestors (Erdmann and his wife Johnanna, and their children Hermann and Louise) migrated to Australia (the state of South Australia) from East Prussia (Ost Prussen) in the early 1840s. After Johanna died, the remaining three moved to the city of Melbourne (capital city in the state of Victoria) and the family and descendents have remained mainly in this state. I don't know of a John Jackel, but offer the above should it fill in any gaps. There is every probability that Erdmann came to Australia via the USA. Naturalisation records show that Erdmann travelled to Australia on a separate ship from his son Hermann. Not sure of the women. One ship they came on was named the Mississipi. Jackel as initially spelt with an umlaut - as in Jäckel - but this was soon dropped with aglicisation. Now pronounced Jaykel. Regards, Lindsay Jackel - Melbourne, Australia
