Son of Crystal Lee King and Samuel Jackson, Joseph Walter Jackson, professionally known as Joe Jackson, was born on July 26, 1929, in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, but grew up in Oakland California. The eldest of four, at age 18, he moved to Chicago to live with his mother.

Fountain Hill is on the highway between Monticello, AR, and Hamburg, AR. It is is Ashley County, but not too far from the Drew County line.
There were many, many African-American Jacksons in this area, and many of the families were quite large.
The Jacksons below may be connected to Entertainer Michael Jackson. His grandfather was a Samuel Jackson. There were a couple of Samuel Jacksons in Ashley County -- and one in Drew County. Of course, it's also possible that none of these were of his family.

Remember that in the 1860 Census of Ashley County, African-Americans were not yet counted and listed. So, these 1860 Jacksons were white. It is possible, though, that the roots of the Black Jacksons can be traced through some of these white Jacksons. Note that most of them lived at Hamburg, down the road from Fountain Hill.

***Is this Samuel Jackson, the father of James Jackson. If so, then the Jackson roots were in Georgia. Samuel Jackson would have become a free man about the age of 20. His James was born in Georgia. This could indicate that the impending Civil War disrupted the White Jacksons and their slaves and put them on the move. James Jackson would become free at about age 5 or 6. His son Samuel would be the first in the family line to be free-born.
