I sometimes think that our family got tired of spelling their names all of the time Charlsie (Charlcie) Jacoups (Jacobs) and decided to go with the most common spelling. Who knows? I know I do with my married name Fennel (pronounced Fennul).
My Aunt Mable (Charlcie's granddaughter) made mention NOT to pay too much attention to the tombstone dates and spelllings. She said she remembers as a young girl the family trying to "figure out" a birthdate to put on Mary Ellen Dutton's tombstone.
My children's grandmother on their father's side did not know what year she was born and had a hard time tracking it down since her parents died when she was young and the court house records burned. Just a few years back she found out that she was older than what she thought.
Sure is nice living in the information age with computers and internet access huh?
