Treaty or Homestead Act

As I was listening to my great aunt Vanda talk about this letter her mother(Lizzie Jacobs) received on 80 acres of land, it struck me as interesting.

If Lizzie got a letter saying something about 80 acres of land in Oklahoma then what government department would this letter had come from? I had initially thought that Vanda might have not been referring to a Treaty 80 acres but to a Homestead Act piece of land. When I looked at the Jeneral Jacoups property document the other day I came to the conclusion that it was likely not Homestead Act because the land Jeneral was applying on was in Alabama. Vanda referred to Oklahoma specifically. (also in the back of mind is why Lizzie would get a letter for only 80 acres. she had a family. should that have been 160 acres then?)

I don't know how old Vanda was when her mother received this letter either. Could be that she has it mixed up a bit. Maybe it was to do with Homestead land rather than Treaty land. I know Indians got 80 acres if they were single and families got 160 acres. This was the same amount of land that Homesteaders got, too.

Has anyone else heard stories like that in the family?

Jared
