Apparently the name Jakeman has its roots in France, coming from Jacques from which we get Jack,Jakes,Jacques,Jakeways, Jackman, Jakeman etc. The French called anybody Jacques the same way the Scots call anyone Jimmy.Later Jacks or jakes were the armour bearers, no doubt William brought a few over for the Hastings show. They then became the Jake men.
