Shalom!
Both of my last names (father and mother) are of Jewish origin. But, I grew up Roman Catholic, so I have very little consciousness about the Jewish religion other than some "out-of-the-norm" family traditions. In my family, we have always strived (compulsively) to be the best at what we do (business, science, literature, etc.), so I don't know if that has to do with a trait, or a learned behavior or an spiritual element of "Jewishness."
So far, I have discovered that both of my last names have Gallician (North Western Spain bordering with Portugal) origins; from there they went to Northern Peru into a region heavily populated by Galician surnames. I am now located in Western Michigan. Talk about a Golobal Village!
Shalom Alêchem!
