Mike-
I don't mind being the only one making an assertion if I am the only one trying to examine the known evidence and interpret it, instead of rehashing the notes of others.
The first thing I want to address is why do you think James Gough is the son of Clare and not of Mary (nee Tattershall)? The reason I believe James is Mary's son is this:
Mary (Tattershall) Jarboe was Stephen Gough's first wife, who he married in 1675.Clare was his widow at his death in 1700.Stephen's youngest son Benjamin Gough was named as next of kin in 1710 [along with John Jarboe] in the administration account of Henry Jarboe. The common denominator between Benjamin Gough and Henry Jarboe is that both their fathers were married to Mary Tattershall. It would be natural for a half-brother to be named next of kin in such an account. Therefore, if Benjamin Gough "youngest son" was born to the first wife Mary, then it would only be assumed that the "oldest son" James Gough would have been born to the first wife as well. The only child of Stephen Gough who seems to definitely be a child of Clare is his daughter Monica. She was still underage in 1714 when James made the final accounting of his father's estate.
If you want proof of James Gough's wife Elizabeth being married before him, see Maryland Chancery Court Records Liber 2, folio 751.In 1711 the boundary of Richard Vowles's dwelling plantation on St Clement's Bay was disputed. On 28 Sept 1711 two depositions were taken to help resolve this.John Nevitt, aged 70, describes the boundary of Vowles's "Redbudd Thickett" being next to "Rocky Point," both tracts had formerly belonged to his father Richard Nevitt according to this deposition. On the same day, Elizabeth Gough, aged 28, said she had formerly been the wife of George Medcalfe who possessed "Rocky Point," and gave a deposition regarding the land's boundary. The 1707 Rent Rolls show the owner of "Rocky Point" to be Samuel Davis, who had married George Medcalfe's widow, and that he had a life estate in the tract. The 1715 Rent Rolls show John Nevell (sic) Sr. to be possessor of the tract, and later that year he sold it as I mentioned in a previous post.
If you want proof of debunking the misconception that James's wife Elizabeth was Elizabeth, daughter of John Jarboe, just see John Jarboe's 1704 will [Wills Liber 3, pt.2, folio 505].She was unmarried at that time. Our Elizabeth's first husband George Medcalfe's estate was administered in 1702, so she was already a widow at the time of Jarboe's will.
