Hi Vera
This may be a repeat reply.
My name is Yerman and I do believe my name was originally spelled Jerman.I further believe my ancestors came from the old Hungarian - Austrian Empire, an area now known as Slovenia - quite possibly the village of Crnomelj.
Quite a few of the Jerman's who migrated to the United States had their names changed to Yerman. In old Austria, the name Jerman is pronounced Yerman - as in (your man), thus the reason for the change.
I noticed in this forum that there are even more variants in Great Britain - quite possibly the USA also - but I haven't run across them.I would assume there is a strong possibility for the Jerman - German changes. In most English cases, the J and G are pronounced the same and change was made to the G.The same can be said for the "man" part of the name - changing to myn is an example. It all boils down to the area the Jerman's re-settled and the common spelling of sounds in that specific area.
I am interested in learning more of the Jerman's who lived in the area I described above. If anyone has any information, please contact me.
Thanks
Kermitt Yerman
