Since there are very few extant parish records for the period prior to 1600 in England, my research on these families has been through the review of wills, manorial records, IPMs, feet of fines, etc. With these records it IS possible to establish residency of members of families over periods of time. I stand by previous statements in regard to the primary residences of the families that I cited.
Since no court records have been cited (and to the best of my knowledge none now exist) to show an early relationship between the Jett and the Washington families, the proximity of the land patents of these two families cannot be used as evidence for or against a relationship. Clearly, some of the families in Old Rappahannock and Westmoreland counties were related by blood prior to their immigration and some were not. Therefore, there was a random element in the distribution of land patents for the first generation of immigrants to Virginia.
The court records that do exist indicate that Peter Jett was a "planter" with a modest plantation. I have seen no record that he ever served in public office and he appears only infrequently in court records. To use a modern term, I would describe him as a member of the "middle class." He does not appear to have been a member of the Virginia gentry. The Washington family and most of the others that I cited were part of the gentry class. These families had sizeable estates (thousands of acres), the men served in public office (justices of the peace, members of the vestry, sheriffs, senior officers in the militia, etc.), and they were (within several generations) descendants of knights and the peerage of England.
I don't see the need to speculate about relationships that cannot be proven and, based upon the available circumstantial evidence, appear unlikely. There are large numbers of other "possible" but implausible relationships that could be enumerated. Ultimately, I do not believe that this discussion will help identify the ancestry of Peter Jett.
