I think you have put together the puzzle pieces about as well as anyone else, but I think you’ll be the second to admit (after me) that we don’t have the full picture yet.
Some comments:
Your #9 – Francis Jett died in King George County in 1766, married to a Catherine. His previous marriage was also to a Catherine, Bronaugh, with whom he owned land in Fauquier County. He is not the same Francis Jett as appears in other Fauquier records. He did not leave any male descendants; I’m not sure where you found a Stephen. Here is a genealogical riddle: Who is the father of Francis Jett Jr.?The answer is, “not necessarily Francis Jett Sr.”They just did that to confuse us, when there were two men with the same name, perhaps uncle and nephew, and one was of an earlier generation. The Francis who died in 1766 was the brother of the famous Col. Thomas Jett of Westmoreland.Did you know there was a transAtlantic ship named the Jett back then?I’ll have to post something about it eventually.Anyway, we already know too much about this Francis d. 1766, so let’s just not talk about him again.
Your #2 and #2.1 – The Francis who was the son of Francis d. 1724 has to be the Francis who established a long line of descendants in Fauquier County. There just isn’t any other Francis to fill that slot.He was probably born about 1720 and may have been somewhat younger than his brothers William (married Ann White, fathered Col. Thomas Jett and the Francis we agreed we don’t need to mention again) and Peter (married Rebecca Bowen, moved to White Oak).
Did you know that George Washington grew up around White Oak?He was born down near the original Peter Jett plantation, and spent his adult years at Mount Vernon, but his boyhood home was right across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg, not far from White Oak.
We know that the Francis in Fauquier County had to have been born not much later than 1720 because he fathered sons who were having children in the 1760s.So look at the generations of the Jett family, starting with Peter as the first generation.
Generation #1 – No one named Francis.
Generation #2 – No one named Francis.
Generation #3 – Two sons named Francis. One from William (m. Hoskins); the other from John (m. Triplett).William’s son died in 1724.John’s son is the one who died in 1761; it was his widow Frances who died in 1766.They didn’t have any children.
Generation #4 – There is a Francis who is the son of John (m. Spillman) but he was a minor when his father died in 1752, so he can’t be starting a family in the 1740s.There is also a Francis, son and grandson of John, but he’s also a minor when his father dies, probably in the 1750s.And then there is the Francis, son of Francis d. 1724.
How many potential Jett fathers are there in Generation 3?I count 7: Peter, John and Francis were sons of William; and John, Francis, Peter and William were sons of John.We have accounted for three of these seven, having a son named Francis, and then ruled out two of these as too young to be the Francis who went to Fauquier.
Can we rule out the other four having an “untraced” son named Francis?
1)It seems fairly clear that Peter, son of William, had no children – he shacked up with Margaret James and eventually married her, but their wills do not indicate any male offspring.
2) Francis, son of John, died without children also.(This is your #6 – and you have him with three children.Do you have a source for this?Ernest Jett’s book has him with one son, Francis of Fauquier, but that appears to be just speculation.)
3) Peter, son of John, died in 1758 with four young sons, none of them named Francis.
4) And William, son of John, married Catherine, daughter of Willoughby Newton and Sarah Eskridge, and they had one son, William, who moved to Loudoun County and then moved back.
The alternative, of course, is that another Francis Jett came over from England, and Peter isn’t the common ancestor after all.
