Cousin Gordon, this is all very romantic but quite factually incorrect. Ada was born 26/05/1875, the eldest of three daughters to William Thomas Jewers and Sarah Maria (nee Cranston), his second wife. Her immediate family didn't go to America, William, Ellen and Charlotte along with William's third wife Caroline were all living in Shoreditch in 1901 and Ellen died in 1970 in Shenley, Herts.
In 1896 Ada married Francis George Smith, who was her next door neighbour. He was born in Islington 30/04/1873 to Francis Smith, a cab driver and Alice (nee Cook) and they were married in Newington Butts the previous year, his father was also called Francis and he was a baker and Alice's father was a butcher, so no gypsies I'm afraid.
For all of this I have dcoumentary evidence, ie birth, marriage and death certificates.
However my father says that Ada had an uncle who went to Canada when she was about 5, and he wanted to take her, but her father wouldn't allow her to go.
As for Windsor - William Jewers gives his place of birth as Windsor, but there is no mention of either him or his father John in the Berkshire Parish records, although there is a Richard Francis, unmarried living in Windsor, so maybe he was a relative.
I have done other research, but too much to put on here unless anyone is interested.
Let me know!
