Thank you Dot---I believe that that Jack Alfred Jiru was a brother to my great grandfather Frank; and also sister to Katherine Jiru Bier, who married Valentine Bier and thus established one of the Jiru/Bier links. There may also be a further Jiru-Bier marriage.
Great grandfather Frank Jiru married Anna Hanauska and had a number of children (6 or 7?, all girls except the youngest, my grampa Edward Joseph Jiru, born October 21, 1891.
The oldest girl was Genevieve, who my mom is named after. Genevieve died of a (probably) of a burst appendix when young, and the rest of the girls died very young also of one of the epidemics of the day. They had a farm, but when the children and Frank passed on, Anna couldn't keep it and moved into town with her little son (grampa) Ed, and ran a boarding house for railroad workers. However, it is said she died "of a broken heart" when grampa was 9, and grampa was raised by the Biers.
Grampa Ed later married Florence Crouch (her father was a circuit riding minister) and had four children in the 20s: Ed Jr., Genevieve, David and Jo Ann. He left the Bier farm at 16 or so and served in the Mexican and first World Wars. After a brief spell as an undertaker, he had a career as a chef at many fine dining establishments in WI and Florida.
Thanks to anyone who can help re-construct any background on the genealogy of the Jiru, Hanauska or Crouch familes!
