Sandi, thank you for the follow-up. My Johan Alfred Johansson came from Finstrom, Aland, Finland. He supposedly left in 1887, without his family. And many Finnish people did actually sail FROM Sweden. He did leave his family behind (wife Maria Sofia and 2 very young daughters, Aina Mathilda born in 1885 and Alina Sofia born in 1882) and I'm not sure if he ever went back. I suppose he could have started a new life over here?
Since the Ellis Island records do not go beyond the 1890's, I have not been able to find any information on his arrival in the US or where he ended up. His 2 daughters, my Grandmother (my Mother's Mother)and Great-Aunt, by way of Ellis Island, eventually wound up in Washington State, but I have no recollection of any mention of my Great-Grandfather being here.
I should be getting some information this weekend from my friend who has done research over there for me and it may give me some more clues on when he actually left the Aland Islands and perhaps which ship.
Is your Grandmother Ida and Martha Rosenquist the same person? Did Ida emigrate with your Grandfather? Do you have a birthdate for your J. Alfred?
Keep in touch!
