JOHNSTONE, JAMES WILLIAM of AUCHTERARDER Scotland:Hello, my name is Karen Maxwell - Grandaughter of JAMES WILLIAM JONSTONE OF AUCHTERARDER, SCOTLAND - Date of birth:Feb 18th, 1891. Married to Louisa Smithies ( aka Smithers / Smitties) of Berkonhead, England.Granddadd died in Oakville, Ontario, Canada in 1970.At the start of WW1 and at the age of 23, my Granddad inlisted with the Candian Armed Forces in Regina where he became a horseman, in the 5th Canadian Field Artillery. He lost one leg after stepping on a mine as well as a finger in the battle of Ypres in April to May 1915. This was the first time the Germans used Mustard Gas and they got hit hard. John McCrae, author of "In Flanders Fields" was the field surgeon in the same artillery and amputated Granddad's mangled leg remains. Granddad suffered there for 3 days alone, after the troops were made to carry on. If not for the Salvation Army finding him, we would have not been blessed with his heart. Upon returning from WW1 he stayed at Christie Street Veterans Hospital in Toronto, Canada. Married my Grandma, mentioned above. Had 2 daughters Jean and Lois and 4 grandkids including myself.
If anyone has any information of this family tree and / or bloodline (nationalities) information attached to the Johnstone name, I would be very grateful. My e-mail address is [email protected]
