I now have reason to believe that the James Jolliff who was the son and heir of James Jolliff of Norfolk Co., VA (d. 1778) was a different person than James Jolliff, who died in 1821 in Barren Co., KY. The Kentucky pioneer was in Norris Town, now in Jefferson Co., Ohio, in 1786, and was in the Washington Co. (Pa.) militia in 1781. He married the daughter of William Norris, who was of Strabane Twp., Washington Co., PA. There was a Luke Jolliff in the West Augusta Co., Va. (the region now covers the Panhandle of West Virginia, southwestern PA, etc.) militia in 1775---very likely his brother. There is no certainty whatsoever that these Jolliffs were related to the Norfolk County family.

Paul Gifford
