To anyone who is interested, the city of Joplin, Missouri, founded 1871, was named after Joplin Creek, a small stream which flows through town. The creek was named for the Rev. Harrison G. Joplin, a Methodist minister who was in the vicinity before 1839.
Harrison Joplin was a son of Mark Jopling who died in Wake County NC in 1815; Mark was the son of Robert and Jane Jopling of North Carolina; Robert probably came from Esh, parish of Lanchester, England; he was in North Carolina by 1769. This all came from the Jopling-Joplin family book by Dorothy Eason, Sarah Fricks and Lucille Adams; it's a great book, very well researched. If you want to know more, let me know.
