I think you might be talking about a group we Turney researchers have been chasing around for a while, to finally find they were Journey.....
Cumberland Co Kentucky survey land records (this is a transcription I have) has John Turney 8/11/1799 to 11/1/1812 and about 1810 a William Turney is mentioned, then 5/25/1805 a Nathaniel Turney is mentioned.
again a transcribtion:
Garrard Co Kentucky - 1799 a Nathaniel Turney married to Elizabeth Pope
1803 Overton Co TN petition (later Jackson Co Tn) has Nathaniel Turney and Peter Turney. The Peter Turney is ours, he died in 1804 Dixon Springs TN in Smith Co.....
Well thanks to Pat who gave the first clue that the original marriage records it looked like it should be Nathaniel Journey....and now a lot of documentation comes from Cleo M Higgins Alward.....what we had thought to be Nathaniel Turney was not a Turney.
So perhaps the John Turney on early Cumberland Co KY land records was also not a Turney?
Since the Journeys were perhaps in Alabama as were the Turneys, and also in Illinois in places like St Claire Co and Fayette Co....as were the Turneys.....this might explain some of the "extra" Turneys we have. They were not Turneys at all but from the Journey family.
Just thought I would throw this out to you.
The Turney line begans with 3 brothers arrival Philadelphia in 1740, 1741, and 1743 - two of them stayed in PA and moved west from there with one line going by the name Dorney (Dorney Park outside Allentown PA is some of their original land)....mine went into Valley of VA and spread from there, with some to KY and Illinois.
