Frank,
Here's what we have learned about Nathan.Note that Ella Hughes says he came from SC; I'm not sure where she got her info on that.We do believe he came from somewhere in the Carolinas.
Nathan originally came from South Carolina. He (as Nathaniel) served in 1793 as a member of Capt. McCavy's 5th Co., 1st Battallion, 2nd Regiment, Washington Co., GA, militia. [Source: Ella Bailey Bahm Hughes]
In 1807 the Governor of Georgia issued a passport, at Washington Co., GA, to Nathan "Jiner" for passage through Creek territory.Land records of the West Florida Parishes indicate that Nathan made improvements to land there in 1806. [Source: "British and Spanish grants, West Florida, 1772-1813 and US land claims, Louisiana, 1812-1852."]
When Nathan took his wife, (Melinda Truney or Turney), and their children from Georgia to Louisiana, they rode in a covered wagon.Children at that time were John, Elizabeth, Thomas, Elsie and Clarissa (my ggg-grandmother).In the family Bible, now owned by Ella Hughes, they made 61 pencil tick marks, presumably one for each day of the journey.
This section of West Florida was under Spanish rule at the time, and was known as the District de St. Helena. In 1811 it came under American rule, and the area where the Joiners lived became St. Tammany Parish, LA.In 1860 the locale became part of Tangipahoa Parish. [Source: Ella Hughes]
Nathan fought in 12 and 13 Consolidated Reg't, Louisiana Militia, in the War of 1812.[Source: Index to Compiled Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812, Louisiana] We have requested a pension file, but don't know if that exists.
Melinda died about 1818.On January 16, 1819, a marriage between Nathan Joiner and Militi Tosit is found in the records of the St. Tammany Parish Courthouse at Covington.
Judging from the 1820 census of St. Helena Parish, both Nathan and wife at that time were at least 45 years old.
