I was recently contacted by a person living on the Mainland who is trying to connect with his family in the islands. His grandmother, Magnolia Kaia Kaalekahi, married a man named Daniel Hamel; she died in Santa Barbara, CA in 1998. On the SSDI she appears as Kaia M. Hamel.
Searching the 1930 census for her required looking for her by her first name and birth year because nothing came up for Kaalekahi. Her family's entry is indexed as "Kaaksahi," obviously indexed by someone unfamiliar with Hawaiian names.
The family is living in Molokai, District 32, in 1930. Her parents are Roger, age 46, and Helen Kaalekahi, age 39. Also listed are Roger, age 16, Elizabeth, age 13, Henry, age 11, George, age 3, and Magnolia, age 10 months. Her father is a pineapple farmer who owns his own home.
The family is also found in the 1920 census, this time indexed as "Kaalckalie." They are living in North Kona on the Big Island with five children, two of whom may have died before 1930. The ages of Roger Jr., Elizabeth and Henry are consistent with those found in the 1930 census, but this one also lists a girl named Magnolia, age 4 yrs 2 months, and a boy named Vincent, age eight months.
I would like to know if I'm on the right track. I'd also like to find family contacts for this man on the Mainland. Please contact me if you're interested. Thank you for any advice or clues you may offer.
