Hi
I am Cyril Kaar, living in Ireland, our family appears to have a differnt origin than yours, also different than C Van Het Kaar... but it is possible they all oroginate from a name originating in Norway, first note I saw on this dates back to the 1400's. I don't have the details to hand but it is on the net somewhere.
Currently i know we are from a Kaar from Hiiumaa, Estonia. In fact Kaar is quite a common name in Estonia, but orginates in Norway/Finland. My grandfather, Jahannes Kaar was a shipwright on Hiiumaa(island on west coast of Estonia). During the Russian expansion in 1917 he shipped out to Argentina and subsequently jumped ship and got another passage to Cork, Ireland. The family in Ireland are all originating from this source. You can find references on the net for us.
We have very little info of the past as my grandfather was very secretive, fear of deportation. We know a sister of his managed to get to London, Ingle Kaar.
From my investigations I would suspect that all Kaars in the world today originate from the original Kaar family in Norway. The name does not seem to appear in other countries until after 1600, this would tie in with my suspicion that they moved south at about the early 1500's to 1600's.
I am sorry I haven't kept a lot of the research but it was a few years ago that I was doing this. Then my interest was aroused again due to a reference I saw regarding a Kaar in Argentina, but this ended up in a dead end. Then I met a guy in the south of England, sailor, who was the image of my Dad and grandad, but not apparently a relation, different name.... I keep my mind open on the possbilities!!
Anyway if you have any questions I'd be happy to try and help, and if you have any thing you think I might be interested in then please pass it on.
regards and happy searching
Cyril
