Origins of Kaczor/Kachur

Hi, all. Not too long ago, I discovered that my family name was originally Kachur. My great-grandfather changed the name to Cochran (a Scottish name) when he arrived in the States in the 1870s.

I know nothing about the Kachur name. What ethnicity is it? It seems to be a variant on Kaczor. Can anyone fill me in?

My great-grandfather, August Kachur, was from Posen or Poznan, then part of Prussia, now in Poland. I've found Kachurs on the Web in Ukraine and Russia. I've found one Web site that seems to indicate Kachur is a Carpatho-Rusyn surname. Another researcher tells me it's a name found in east Germany, but it's pretty uncommon there.

So am I German? Polish? Urkainian? Slavic? Carpatho-Rusyn? None of those things?

I'd be grateful for any info.

John Cochran (Kachur)
