John, nice of you to post I will email you with more info on Philip Kadel; this is just to get you started incase my email to you does not go through. I do not now much of this Philip Kadle’s descendants except for mine own line descendant from Philip. From your post it may be that we are cousins. Do you know your Great-Grandmother’s middle name? Was it Ann or Anna? I found in the 1880 census that Philip had a daughter named Martha, and in the 1860 census it appears this same girl was named Anna and accourding to the census her approximate date of birth was 1853/54. As far as the original spelling, that is a good question. Probably we will never know for sure unless some document can be found in Germany for Philip or for his ancestors. In the 1860 census his surname is listed as Codel. Remember that most of the general populace could not read or write in this time and officials like census takers and clerks in county offices would write down whatever would sound correct to them when they were told a person’s name. Philip wife’s own death record in the county clerks office listed her name spelled Kaudle. Their tombstone list their name as Kadel, so this is what I consider the most accurate until I find any information to dispute this. Hope to hear from you again.
