Query; Researching surname Kaethler or Kathler of Danzig and Hamburg Germany. Wondered about possible Mennonite connection, and surname pronunciation with silent or quiet "h" and different spelling, as Ketler, Kettler, Kitler, or Käthler, or Kaethler, or Koethler. Maternal GrandMother Hedwig Clara Käthler/Engel, b; Feb 15, 1875, was confirmed(from original certificate) as Kaethler, Mar 28, 1889 St Catharines Church, Danzig, Germany. Have not been successful in locating Kirche records for St Catharines. Surname was spelled Käthler on old Post Cards. She and Family moved to Hamburg about 1900. She was employed with jobs in England from Hamburg. She met Hamburg-America Lines ships Carpenter Otto August or August Otto Engel. He was born in Breslau area Schlesian Germany, educated in Berlin and employed in Hamburg. They were married, perhaps in Hamburg, about 1903-04. www.ellisislandrecords show that Hedwig Engel arrived in New York 30 May 1905 on board ship Hamburg, from the port of Cuxhaven Hamburg. By 1906 they were both in New York, USA where daughter Irma H. Engel/Horn was born 1907. Hedwig C. Engel died 1911, Meherrin, Va. USA. Any Mennonite connection, and Ancestor, Descendent and Relative information Hamburg and Danzig/Gdansk would be much appreciated.
