Hi Laurel,
My name is Marjorie Kagels (with an "s" on the end). I am married to Donald Leo Kagels.
The first to come from Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Germany, was Johann Franz Frederick Kagel (without the "s" at the time he came from Germany) and his wife Frederika Christiana Louisa Sophia Sundt.
Fred was born 19 August, 1842 at Durow, Pommerin, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Germany, and he died 23 November, 1915 in Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois, USA. Frederika was born 14 May, 1849, at Quitzenow, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Germany, and died 21 May, 1929 at Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois, USA.
Mecklenburg/Schwerin is in what used to be East Germany in the northern part, and east of Hamburg, Germany.
I checked the German Lutheran Church, Danville, Illinois, records and when Fred and Frederika first came from Germany, the "s" was not used at all, and then as time went on in the records, it was used part of the time. Then eventually, it was used all the time. There is one aunt in the family who refuses to use the "s" on the end of the name, but everyone else uses the "s".
The name Kagel means "cowl maker" and a cowl is the hood of a monk's garment. So the first Kagel was likely a hood maker. I don't know about the crest, but if I find any information on it, I will try to remember your contact and let you know.
Marjorie Kagels
Peoria, Illinois
