I have an ancestor named Detlev Kahl who was born in Matzwitz, Schleswig-Holstein, "Prussia" around 1807. Don't know his middle name. His nephew, Detlev Joachim Friederich Kahl, came to the US in the late 1850s and "stayed with family in Davenport, Iowa. I've been told there is a "Kahl" building somewhere in the Quad Cities. Detlev JF later moved to Radcliffe in Hardin Co, Iowa. I have posted a preliminary family tree on my family homepage called "Detlev Joachim Friederich Kahl of Radcliffe...". I haven't fleshed out the families of Detlev JF Kahl's brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, etc., so I don't know if your Detlev is the same as the Detlev born around 1807. Also, Detlef JF Kahl and his wives are buried at the Sherman Cemetery near Radcliffe, Iowa. Funny how close that name is to "Shipman"! Hope this helps a little!
