John Leonard Dekalb b.1800, Alsace Loraine, Germany

He was a relative of Baron Dekalb, of Germany. He received an excellent education in his native country, being a graduate of Heidelberg University of Germany. As a young man he came to the U.S. and for a number of years was a traveling representative of a mercantile house in Philadelphia. He then returned to Europe and was married in Amsterdam, Holland to Miss Gertrude Topp. She was from a well known and prominent family of that country. He brought his bride to the U.S. and became identified with mercantile interests in Philadelphia. He was a man of fine address and of scholarly attainments and could speak four languages. He possessed splendid business ability, keen discernment and marked enterprise. He manifested a strong attachment for the land he had adopted, taught his children lessons of patriotism and love for the old flag. His political allegiance was given to the democracy as set forth by Andrew Jackson, He was a Mason. Subsequently he moved his family to Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, where he secured a farm and was connected with agricultural interests up to the time of his death. He died in 1867, at the age of 67 in Bellasylvia, Pennsylvania. Bellasylvia is now called Lopez. WI widow died 1876 in Pennsylvania at the age of 67. She was a lady of culture and refinement. To Mr. and Mrs DeKalb were born eight children.
