My Camp, Ferdinand, was born in 1831 in or around Bremen, Germany. He emigrated to the US as a child in 1838-39. The first document I found him on was the 1860 Ohio Census (Toledo). He and his family moved to Akron, Ohio between 1860-1865 where they remained.

My problem has been I do not know what his German name was, nor can I find any parents or siblings. I know he emigrated with his mother, who was (later) married to Edmund Haack. I don't know if we can help each other, since you mentioned West Virginia. However, since I can't place him anywhere before 1860, he could have been in West Virginia.
