I found out why we can't find anyone farther back than sampson. We went to adair co. Ky and dug thru courthouse records. Sampson's mother or step-mother was there to. She came from N.C. somewhere from rowan co. nc. we had a name change. It was caused by gov. officials who wrote what they heard phoneticly. Hold on to your hat-- We started out in baden, germany. Name at that time (1730 was knrtzer, they took the Charming Nancy to this countrythey came into PA. By then the original spelling had had vowals added where they wern't the outcome was knortzer then from there thru VA. to NC. by then it was kanatzer, by the time it shows up on the KY cenus it's canatsey. have fun I'm ready to start working on my mothers family. bye now. VJC or I guess it should be VJK. :-)
