James Preston Kanode, aka "Jim", can be found on the census for 1900 and 1910, the 1890 census was destroyed by fire in DC. He died on October 9, 1913 at Kanode's Mill on Tom's Creek about 2 miles west of Blacksburg, present was his wife Lilly C. Price, his doctor was his close friend Doc Ribble. Jim's grandson, Wister Long, in a video made around 1991, recalled that he had been told his grandfather wanted to see him and that they had traveled through the rain to get to Jim's house and bedside before he died on that day. Wister was a month shy of 8 years old at the time.
