Oscar Kanouse, c.1880, Portsmouth, Ohio

Oscar, my maternal grandfather, married Irma Clarke. Though Oscar died in Portsmouth, I'm not at all certain if he was born there or even in the United States for that matter. Am I correct in assuming that the name is an Anglicized variation of the German name Knaus? An Austrian acquaintance once told me that the name is a common one in a certain valley in the Austrian Alps.
