Kanouse (Kanose) - PA to OR ca. 1860

I am trying to find information about a family who took the Oregon Trail from PA to OR around 1850-1860. Their son, John, is my great-great grandfather. When he came of age he began using the spellings Kanos, Canose and Canos, but I believe the original spelling may have been Kanouse (Knauss). I have no other information about his parents or siblings. Any clues would be appreciated.
