Kanouse/Knouse/Knauss

I have been working on my great-grandfather's family for sometime now, and I'm stuck. His name was Jesse. In the 1856 Census of Louisa County, IA his last name was spelled Knouse, and he was born in 1800 in TN. He was married to Mary (Turnipseed?) who was born abt. 1820 in OH. Their children were: Samuel - b. 1839 in OH; David - b. 1841 in OH; Andrew Jackson (my grandfather) - b. 1846 in OH; Nancy - b. 1855 in IA. Not listed was another son, James - b. two years later.

I have found a Jesse Knauss (on the Internet) - b. 1792 in PA and died in 1840 in IA which lists some of the same children, but since all but Samuel were born after 1840 I don't see how this can be the right Jesse.

I have also been told that Jesse's father was John Henry, but I have been unable to find any proof of that. I would really like to trace this line back farther. If anyone has any information that might help me, please e-mail me at peggykae@msn.com.
