Peter Kanouse born 1760's

In the 1840 census for Orange Co. NY Town of Minisink on the New Jersey border There is Peter Kanuff. double f meant s back then. Census says 1 M 70-80, 1F<10 1M5-10, 1F 10-15, 1F 40-50.
Also in Town of Minisink 1840 is one Cornelius Mesler.
In the next census 1850 there's Cornelius in the adjacent town of Deerpark, Orange Co. NY
Cornelius 46 Farmer, Rhoda 43, Andrew J. Misler 22,
Mary Kanouse 17 born N.J., Sarah Misler 14, William Canouse 12, Margaret J. Canouse 9, Mahala Canouse 5.
So it seems maybe this old Peter Canouse dies and maybe Cornelius adopted his kids. Only thing is Margaret J. and Mary Canouse were both my great great grandmothers,
two of their children having married. So I'm doubly Canouse, more purebred.
Who was Peter Kanuff?
