I think you're right. In further investigations over the past two years, I have heard of this lineage and decided it is most likely correct. My ancestor is Jefferson (Pierce) Kantner, my great-grandfather. His daughter Catherine Kantner (b. 1903) was my Dad's mom.

I had originally found the "Tipe" name in an 1860 census at the National Archives in DC and it was clearly written as Tipe. Not sure how that came to be, but perhaps it was just a misprint. Thanks for the follow-up and confirmation of what I supected was the right answer.
