Wm. H. Karnes, Pioneer Citizen, Rites Held
William Henry Karnes, pioneer citizen, died Wednesday morning at his home here after a brief illness from bronchial pneumonia. He was 73 years of age.
Mr. and Mrs. Karnes had recently moved from south of town to the Lamar property, having lived near Verden for 35 years. Mr. Karnes, earlier in life, taught school, but later years had farmed.
The funeral services were held at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. Wilkes Spradlin Dean officiating.
Mr. Karnes was born April 8, 1867 at Edgar Springs, Missouri. Was married to Minnie M. Davis in 1891 and to this union seven children were born, three of whom preceeded him in death.
Mr. Karnes was a consecreated christian and a loving father to his family, having gained highest esteem of all who knew him by his sincere fellowship of brotherly love to all.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Karnes; four daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Clift of Cement, Ok., Mrs. Edith Jocoy of Hobbs, N.M., Mrs. Millie Cuniff of Sour Lake, Texas and Mrs. Grace Akin of Gracemont, Ok.; one son, Arthur of Verden; one sister, Mrs. Mollie Pliler of Baxter Springs, Kansas; three brothers, G.M. Karnes of Tulare, Ca., J.E. Karnes of Walnut Ridge, Ark. and Mike Karnes of Verden.
[Wm. Henry Karnes was the s/o James Harrison 'Grab' Karnes and Sarah Caroline Wallis/Wallas/Wallace. Minnie Magdalene Davis was born 02 Apr 1874 in Arlington, Mo. and died 20 Oct 1964 at Cement, Caddo county, Ok. She is buried in the Verden cemetery. They were married in 1891. Children of Wm. Henry Karnes were William Boyd Karnes born 1909 and died 1913; Alpha Myrtle Karnes born 05 Oct 1892 in Arkansas and died 05 Feb 1972. Married William Clarence 'Poppy' Clift; Edith Karnes was born ca 1901 in Arkansas and married Raymond Duard Jocoy Sr.; Millie Karnes b 1902; Grace Karnes b 1905; Arthur (adopted) b 1914 and died 1990.]
