Krpan-Sikic

I was given a family tree by my grandfather some years before he died. The names at gether athe very bottom of the tree are Anica Krpan and Ivan Sikic. For some reason, when they immigrated, The name was changed to Karpan, i imagine either because they were not together at the time or because they choose to take the woman's name instead of the man's name? I have heard of this being done but do not know why.

So the entire Karpan line that i have on paper rests on Krpan & Sikic. I would like to find out how far back the names and information go for each but am at a stopping point. I think Ellis Island claims one is from Croatia and the other, from Hungary. I will have to look again.

If anyone has any information, feel free to respond.
