I have discovered my great-grandfather William Kasten, b. Chicago, Dec 1872. His occupation seems to be centered around "clerk and hardware dealer." As you sort William Kasten information, I would appreciate anything you uncover that might be related to my William Kasten as I have not yet pinned down his parents, except that they were both German born.
Identifying g-grandfather William was tricky as he went by several names:
1. Wilhelm Kasten, age 25, is listed as the father on my grandfather's (George Dewey Kasten, b. Chicago, 9 Sep 1898) Chicago birth certificate. Wife's name is Martha, maiden name Borth. Both parents born in Chicago; German descent. George was their second child. The first was Wilhelm Kasten (later William McKinley Kasten) b. Chicago, 17 Oct 1896.
2. Walter C. Kasten, age 27, in 1900 Census (same address at 548 W. Division Street as on the 1898 birth certificate). Wife Martha and sons William and George.
3. William C. Kasten, age 37, in 1910 Census. New name, same guy, same immediate family with wife Martha, sons William McKinley and George Dewey, plus new daughter Mirtle (Myrtle???), age 7. Now living at 2210 W. Division Street, Chicago.
4. Finally, there is a William C. Kasten listed in the Chicago Death Index as follows:
William C. Kasten, 12/10/1910, Age 37. While not yet proven, this is very probably the same man based on the exact name and age coincidence, and with family lore that my grandfather's dad died when he was quite young (ie George D. Kasten would have been 12 years old in 1910.)
