Kathan Family Genealogy Forum

It is 3 weeks since the Reunion so have had a little time to reflect on the event. Interesting to note that nearly everyone attending was a descendent of Capt. John Kathan's son Lt Daniel. For me it was interesting to see the area and all of the small towns in which the immigrants from VT settled. Along with Donald and Susan Kathan, Vickie and Darrell Storlie, Cindy and Bill Cameron we visited Stony Creek, Athol, Thurman, Bakers Mills, Johnsburg, Bates Cemetery, Gill Cemetery and Sodom Cross (Peaceful Valley Rd,
Sodom and Back to Sodom). All of these places had special meaning for me for this is the area where Edson H Kathan lived with his first wife Harriet Gill (my gggrandmother) and remained with his second wife Caroline Rhodes Grimes and their family of 5 children. Edson's father and mother, Charles and Sabra (MacFarland) Kathan are buried in the Gill cemetery in Stony Creek. Harriet's parents, Daniel and Asenith Gill are also buried there. As near as I can tell this cemetery is on the farm that Edson sold to Harriet when they were about to separate. Within a year she had sold the farm to his brother who then sold it to her brother, Christopher Columbus Gill. Edson had started a tannery with Otis Jones on a parcel of the farm. This tannery later became a large tannery owned by Bowman. I met a few of the people with whom I have corresponded by email. Vickie Storlie's books for each of Capt. John's descendants are interesting and helpful. John Scherer's presentation of his research regarding Martha Moore and Martha Baird was very interesting so will keep an eye for further developments. Thanks to Rev. Boardman and Joyce Kathan and their family for all of the work to organize this event. The local historians were very helpful. The Warren County Clerk's office personnel were courteous and helpful when we didn't have a clue. Hope to see more of you at the next Kathan Family Reunion! Patty
