Edson Harlow Kathan was b. 20 Aug 1890. His obit showed born in Sheldon, NE which doesn't exist. I checked with historical society, they said most likely Shelton, NE in Buffalo county which adjoins Adams county. The 1890 Veterans schedule to the census shows his father, Nelson H. Kathan, living in Prosser, Adams, NE. Edson enlisted in the 12th Infantry 24 Jun 1912 at Jefferson Barracks (St.Louis) and was discharged there 23 Jun 1915 (honorable discharge). He m. Edith Mary Rowlen 21 Feb 1920 in Urbana, Champaign, IL. (date of license application which shows names as both Edith Rowlen and Edith Kathan). Edson d. 5 July 1979 in Lemay, St. Louis, MO.
Obituary from the News-Gazette of 8 July 1979, a central Illinois newspaper pubished in Champaign-Urbana. Edson last resided In Greenfield, Missouri but died at the VA Hospital in Jefferson Barracks, Lemay, Missouri.
Edith Rowlen was b. 5 Feb 1898 in IL. The obituary for Edith Rowlen Kathan in 28 May 1951 News-Gazette, Champaign-Urbana did not give a specific date of death. Her death also noted in the indexed book "Journal of Deaths, Champaign County Nursing Home, 1948-1987". I have not yet learned the reason for her being in a nursing home.
