Hello! I recently found a Kathan in my genealogy research, related only by marriage, but she might be one answer to Fridolin Kathan's statement in the message dated Dec.26, 2000-- "maybe there's a link (from Austria) somewhere to all the US Kathans…" My info: August L. Neubarth "Uncle Gus" Son of John G. Neubarth (b. Illinois abt 1838) and Josephine Kathan (b. Tyrol, abt 1840; d. 1908, Chico) BORN: August 30, 1864, Waterloo, St. Clair Co., Illinois MARRIED: Rose Schorr b. Gridley, Butte Co., California (my maternal grandmother's aunt) DIED: aft. 1918, prob in Chico FAMILY: 1. Edwin Neubarth 2. Wesley Neubarth born circa 1900 A.L. Neubarth's bio in "History of Butte County" (George C. Mansfield, 1918, p. 724) gave me this information about his mother Josephine Kathan Neubarth: "Mrs. John Neubarth, who was Miss Josephine Kathan before her marriage, came from the beautiful mountain region of the Tyrol. She had a brother who volunteered as a Union soldier, served in an Illinois regiment, and died in Libby prison. Mrs. Neubarth passed away at Chico in 1908, beloved by all who knew her. She was mother of five children, three of whom are living." It's too bad they didn't name the names of her brother and her other living children! I found John and Josephine Neubarth in the U.S. Census, Chico, Butte County, California, 10 June 1880, p.27. John was born in Illinois, as were the first four of their children, August, (15 yrs) Annie, (13) John G. (11) , and Rudolph. (9) The fifth, Adolphus, (7) was born in Missouri. John's parents came from Saxony. Josephine was 40, so she would have been about 24 when she was married, so she probably came to Illinois when she was a child or young woman. She gives her birthplace (and her parents') as Austria on the census. That's what I have. I hope it is of interest. Meg Garrett California meg.garrett@libraries.claremont.edu
