Harriet (Gill) Kathan filed for a Mother's Civil War Pension through her son, Albert Kathan. Filed in Winnebago Co., Illinois. In the application it states that Edson abandoned the support of his family and went to live or did live with a woman by the name of Caroline Rhodes sometime in Sept. 1851 since which time he has never lived with his family nor given them any support whatever but from all information continues to live with said Caroline Rhodes.

Civil War Pension File #155910, Albert Kathan.

She applied for the pension in 1864 and was living in Roscoe, Winnebago Co., Illinois at the time.
